Press Release:

Strategic Corrosion Management (SCM) has enhanced its presence in the North East Scotland energy sector with the support of respected industry specialist Donald Smith.

As an independent ‘Specialist Technical Consultant’, Donald will represent SCM, primarily in the Aberdeen market and will be based at the Darra Centre in Turrriff.

Donald will support the integration of the company’s technologies and its 360integrity framework into clients’ risk management and plant maintenance systems. Donald will also undertake a number of specialist Corrosion and Integrity Consultancy roles for SCM Clients around the world.

Having been a principal of NE Group (North East Corrosion Engineers) through to 2005, and a primary mover in the early development of Risk Based Inspection (RBI) and Risk Based Fabric Maintenance (RBFM) technologies, Donald has mentored more than 100 of the Corrosion and Integrity Management Engineers currently operating in industry.

Donald has more than 30 years academic and practical experience in UK and international energy-related businesses with expertise in leadership & management, technical consultancy in corrosion, inspection and integrity engineering for oil & gas production, refining and petrochemical process.

He has also published a number of technical and management papers covering the issues of pipeline corrosion risk assessment.

Donald joins SCM shortly after the company established a satellite office in the region to service clients in North East Scotland. The company, which has operations in East Anglia, Gwent and in North East England, delivers a suite of specialist corrosion mitigation and control services.

Through the SCM flagship specialist toolset ‘RISCm’ (Risk, Integrity & Strategic Corrosion Management), underpinned by extensive knowledge of material corrosion and degradation in harsh industrial environments, SCM supports clients’ asset management programmes and safety protocols around the world.

Teams of SCM surveyors provide detailed analysis across a plant or offshore installation, which generates an on-going corrosion management and maintenance programme monitored and managed through the cloud-based RISCm software package.

RISCm enables the delivery of SCM’s 360integrity framework, which encourages organisations to take a more holistic approach to integrated plant operations and infrastructure to deliver a more comprehensive approach to integrity management, maintenance and monitoring.

Donald will supply technical support in ensuring the full compliance of SCM’s technologies with the upcoming ISO 55000 standard and the Health and Safety Executive’s KP4 strategies. His target of the dissemination of the 360integrity approach is crucial to SCM ongoing developments.

Ian Cordingley, Managing Director of SCM, said: “Don’s expertise will be invaluable in helping operators and corporate clients understand how compliance with existing and new standards in a simple and cost-effective manner can be hugely beneficial to every aspect of their business, from production and marketing to safety and stakeholder KPI performance.

“I am delighted to welcome Donald to our team as there are few people with the depth and breadth of skill, knowledge and expertise that he has developed over many years and it bodes well for the future take up of our technologies that we have such a respected advocate as Donald supporting us.”

Donald Smith said: “SCM is bringing a fresh approach to corrosion management and I am keen to be part of their future plans. It’s an innovative organisation in that all of its systems and technologies are designed to progress the concepts of fully integrated management systems and I am looking forward to helping clients in North East Scotland and beyond adopt the concept.”
